Why you cant´t do this with default magento

It would be possible to create a multiple selectbox and add manually all your cars to the option-list in the attribute settings. This would be a huge simple one-level list and it would be almost impossible to maintain the overview of them. Moreover the customer would get a list containing hundred of cars which he has to search for his own car. To make it easier for the shop owner and his customer there are three selectors: make, type and specific data. The latter is a text input in a car to offer you a certain flexibility. So for example, a car named "Volkswagen Golf MK 1" would be separated in:

Make: Volkswagen
Type: Golf
Specific data: MK 1 (here you can also put the engine.id or year of construction)
